Apprenticeships are as vital to the lifeblood of our industry as they are to the local community. Christy Turner work with Suffolk New College to seek out suitable candidates and see them on their journey to what will hopefully become a career manufacturing and maintaining the roller mills, hammer mills, flaking mills and pulverizers that ship worldwide to industries as diverse as racehorse feed manufacturers, recycling companies, bakery and food millers, as well as farmers and animal feed specialists.

We caught up with Christy Turner’s newest apprentice, Maison Kerr, in his third month in the workshop under the watchful supervision of Production Manager, Bob Rudd.

Bob is impressed with Maison’s progress and after his first day on the lathe, shares his thoughts:

Maison has made a great start to his apprenticeship. He’s gained a variety of experience in different disciplines including spraying, welding & fitting but yesterday was his first solo day working on a lathe, albeit under close supervision. He has shown concentration, attention to detail and working to close dimensions.

Great first day Maison, well done and keep up the good work

Maison’s enthusiasm has grown with his skill set and he looks set to become part of the team. We asked him for his first impressions:

Working at Christy Turner has been amazing so far. It has definitely come with some challenges which I have overcome with the help of my colleagues. I had my first day on the lathe, which was tricky at first, but over time I have gained confidence and was able to operate it on my own by the end of the day, with help from a workmate. Overall, it has been really enjoyable working at Christy Turner and hope to expand my range of skills and knowledge in the coming future.
