Christy Turner prides itself on its apprenticeship scheme. Not only does this show commitment to encouraging and developing new local talent, but the programme also builds key staff members that go on to become a vital part of our team.

Our apprentices can be office or workshop based and are run in conjunction with Suffolk New College.

We asked Andrew about his impression of the scheme and how he came to be an apprentice with Christy Turner: “with a young family to consider, my previous occupation in retail was proving to be unstable. With machining specifically in mind, I began searching the government website” Andrew explains.

Taking on the roll refurbishment department, which includes precision grinding, matting and fluting as well as machining of components for new machines and our spares supply service. Servicing and refurbishing roller mills, flaking mills and hammer mills is an integral part of Christy Turner’s support services.

Andrew continues “I was mentored by Peter and Steve, who, with a combined 30 years plus experience in machining at Christy Turner meant I had the best training from the experts. My apprenticeship gives me a Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing in Engineering as well as a Level 1 in TIG welding and a licence in Overhead & Gantry Crane and Slinging”

Christy Turner Production Manager, Bob Rudd, has nothing but praise for Andrew’s achievements:

“One of our ‘graduating apprentices’ Andrew has nearly completed his apprenticeship and has shown commitment to learning throughout. He has learnt an enormous amount on a variety of subjects including fitting and welding, but his chosen subject of machining is where he has excelled the most. He has become a confident person, utilising the skills he has learnt with regards to milling and turning and has worked himself up to becoming the company's pre-eminent roll grinding expert”

Andrew looks forward to graduating and continuing to develop as a skilled labourer with Christy Turner.

Away from the workshop, Andrew is a proud father of two boys, with whom he and his wife like to spend quality time together. An obvious affinity with tools: Andrew can be found picking up a guitar or trowel for his other passions of music and gardening.
